Plant Problem Question Guidelines
The following guidelines are intended to help you to focus on the information
that might be useful in identifying your problem and determining an appropriate solution.
While it's not required to supply all this information when posing your question, the more
information you submit, the greater the likelyhood that someone will be able to provide
a useful response.
- Identify the plant(s) as well as you can.
If you don't know its name, describe it throughly including its approximate age (see Plant Identification -- coming later).
- Describe the problem in detail.
- When did it start? Does the plant have a history of this problem?
- Where did it start? (Example: "The leaves are turning brown." Started on the leaf edge or the entire leaf?
Started with the old leaves or the new ones? Started with the leaves near the bottom of the plant or near the top?).
- How severe is it? Is it cosmetic or does the plant appear to be hurting? If discolored, how extensive is the discoloration.
- How extensive is it? Is it confined to a single plant or single species or are several plants experiencing problems?
- What measures have been tried already?
- Describe your current "cultural practices"; irrigation, fertilization, pesticide use, and cultivation practice.
- Describe your soil conditions (see Soil Page -- coming later).
- Identify your location (Carlsbad, Poway, etc.) and describe the area (coastal, inland valley, mountain, etc.)
- Identify the climate zone and describe the microclimate experienced by the plant
(see Climate Page).
